For over 30 years, the VOCM Cares Coats for Kids Campaign has helped keep thousands of families warm during the Winter season. In partnership with NL Power, donations are collected in locations around the province! And thanks to the support of The Village Shopping Centre, a free pop up shop will help ensure families get the warm wear they need.
Throughout the province, collection sites were set up with Newfoundland Power or Woodwards and in those areas, we matched them with a charitable group that would ensure the items got to those that needed them most.
Here on the Avalon, donations were collected by Newfoundland Power and dropped off at our ‘store space’ inside The Village Shopping Centre. We also eagerly invited schools, businesses, clubs and groups to collect and drop off as well. Then, with the help of volunteers, we set p our pop-up-shop. Then over the days that followed, we shared hundreds of warm coats with community centres, charitable groups, families and individuals that needed them, completely free of charge. Our NL Power volunteers were a tremendous support during the entire month: from collecting/dropping off donations to being ‘personal shoppers’ with guests in the shop.
We look forward to Coats for Kids in 2026!

Block the Bus 2025
VOCM Cares in partnership with The Village Shopping Centre hosted another BLOCK THE BUS campaign! This year, donations were collected in support of the Single Parents Association (SPANL).
Executive Director of SPANL, Danielle Seward, spoke on how the need has only grown this year. SPANL had approved about 650 children already and still had hundreds of applications to review.
It was an electric day inside and outside on the parking lot of The Village Shopping Centre! Inside there was fun for the whole family with bouncy castles, face painting, balloon animals and more! While outside featured an appearance by Bluey the dog, a demonstration from the St. John’s Fire Department trucks, and other fun activities.

Thank you to all donors, big and small, and to the staff at The Village Shopping Centre for your help and contributions. Together we had an extremely fun and successful day!

Fish & Chips Challenge
In partnership with McNiven’s Pub, VOCM Cares hosted its first ever Food Challenge! Local restaurants were invited to participate featuring their delicious fish and chips. Each participant was eager to showcase their food, invite patrons to try a new spot away from the typical city core, and most importantly, to support local charity. At the end of the month, each participating restaurant made a donation to VOCM Cares that will support communities in the province. Now that’s what we call a FUNdrasier!
Patrons also got to vote for their favourite feed of fish and chips! Keith’s Diner was our first ever winner with an honourable mention to King Cod for coming in a close second place.

National Philanthropy Day
On National Philanthropy Day, we celebrate 45 years with the VOCM Cares Foundation!
VOCM Cares has been a household name for decades, and this year marks our 45th anniversary.
Our primary mission at VOCM Cares is to support communities across Newfoundland and Labrador through charitable causes. We achieve this primarily through Community Service Initiatives and Program Funding.
As we are all aware, the past few years have presented additional challenges, and the demands on community-based organizations have continued to increase. We’ve seen this first hand with our Community Service Initiatives. You may be familiar with them:
VOCM Cares Janeway Family Support Fund In partnership with the Janeway Foundation; funds are provided to provide support to Janeway patients and their families. This support can be anything from specialized medical equipment, medications, assistance with accommodations or even counselling.
Buddy Bears in partnership with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department; teddy bears are kept on board fire trucks and the fire department use the bears for children when facing car accidents, structural fires or other similar high stress situations.
Happy Tree in partnership with The Avalon Mall and the Salvation Army; toy donations are collected and distributed for children in need throughout the province.
Coats for Kids, an annual children’s winter clothing drive, providing low income families with warm coats free of charge.
Pack the Pub in partnership with The Newfoundland Embassy, non-perishable food donations are collected in support of the Community Food Sharing Association.
Block the Bus In partnership with The Village Shopping Centre in support of SPANL; school supply donations are collected and distributed to school-aged children.
Thanksgiving Food Drive In partnership with Metrobus and Sobeys, non-perishable food donations are collected in support of the Community Food Sharing Association.
Our quarterly Program Funding attracts numerous applications, each of which is carefully reviewed by our Board of Directors. One significant factor in the approval process is the availability of funds. Through fundraisers and the generosity of donors, we strive to support as many charities and community groups as possible.
We fundraise throughout the year to support all of our programs; our biggest fundraiser is our Radio Bingo. We also do 50/50s, Dial A Carol and others.
Here’s the thing, the need only grows. So many more groups are seeking our assistance and we just don’t have sufficient funding to meet these requests. That’s where you come in. Your donation to the VOCM Cares will directly impact communities around the province. The more funds raised, the more groups we can support; it really is that simple.

Coats For Kids 2024
For over 30 years, the VOCM Cares Coats for Kids Campaign has helped keep thousands of families warm during the Winter season. As the cold weather approaches, you can help be there for those in need by donating gently used or new winter wear from September 30 – October 25, 2024.
Winter items including coats, hats, mittens, and boots for children, youth and adults are greatly appreciated. Please no broken zippers, soiled, or torn items, or out-of-season clothing. This is important for the safety and strength of the program.
