Gordon Seabright Volunteer of the Year 2022 Recipient Announcement
Congratulations to Mr. Gerald Mercer of Brigus, NL – this years recipient of the 2022 Gordon Seabright Volunteer of the Year Award.
Gerald Mercer has volunteered countless hours to his community and local youth for over 40 years. He has been a dedicated volunteer leader for the Newfoundland and Labrador cadet movement since 1980. With his “can-do’ attitude and positive approach Gerald has helped ensure that youth were given opportunities to grow, develop and succeed. Through his mentorship, leadership, and instruction, countless youth in Canada have given back to their own communities and have become today’s leaders.
Gerald has also contributed greatly to his town through the knowledge, leadership and dedication he has brought to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 65, Brigus. He is always available to answer questions or help with troubleshooting, and has no issues in rolling up his sleeves to deal with physical work at the branch, even plumbing issues. He has guided the branch through tough periods, and under his command he has led the branch through various projects including a $175,000 addition to the branch building in order to provide classroom space for the local Sea Cadet Corp group.
Gerald has made a significant contribution to the town of Brigus. As a councilor for four years he went above and beyond the normal call of duty, delivering exceptional results and providing superior mentioning to fellow colleagues. He also has served as a member of the Brigus Volunteer Fire Brigade, with two years as Fire Chief.
Gerald is well known and well respected in the community and gives fully of himself for the betterment of everyone around him. He has not only been a passionate volunteer and leader, but he has mentored and inspired many others to also give of their time to help strengthen their community.
